The Sprout Project

Building a new generation of environmentally aware kids by instilling gardening as a hobby

Gardening is a multi-sensory activity that helps kids gain knowledge and be fascinated by the wonders of the plant world! It is a hobby that can only be learned by getting their hands dirty in the soil. The ‘sprout’ project aims to help kids learn about gardening by providing fun activities that help them grow plants and learn about their environment. Hence, the project sows the seeds of awareness and responsibility towards the environment.

Problem Statement

The scarce availability of age-appropriate learning material that is both educational and fun for kids has led to fewer kids taking up gardening as a hobby.

Brief

To construct a program that encourages children to embrace gardening as a pastime, thereby connecting them more deeply with their surrounding environment.

Design system & Solution

The proposed design system that is planned in 2 phases

Phase 1- Initiating

Initiating the interest in growing plants through an Activity Kit

Go to the Phase 1

Phase 2-Retaining

Retaining the interest by developing a Gamified Gardening App

Research

1.Surveys Insights

Data acquired by a survey were more than 70 parents participated to share their thoughts on using a gardening app for their kids.

63% of people think gardening is a difficult task for kids to do without any guidance

94% of parents think an activity-based app/kit would help kids take up gardening

70% of people said the knowledge they gained during school did not help them when they took up gardening

81% of people think gardening as a hobby will be helpful for kids

2.Interview with parents

Interviewing the potential users as well as parents

(the decision makers) to understand the problem statement better and figure out their various pain points.

Parent

"The knowledge that will be provided should not feel like reading an encyclopedia"

Karan

Parent

"Retaining the kids attention is going to be a difficult job"

Sakshi

Parent

"Incentives like stickers or even fertilizers or seeds can be provided to motivate the parents."

Meena

Parent

"Kids can be motivated through points, recognition that they get by sharing their progress and other stuff like stickers etc."

Aananya

Parent

"The solution should not increase the screen time for kids"

Varun

Parent

"The app should not increase the screen time in turn help them reduce it"

2.Secondary Research

INSIGHTS

1

The app should not increase screen time but be a medium to take up gardening

3

External motivators like points and appreciation rewards need to be incorporated

5

Having plant identifiers and like a built-in source of information to help them explore the nature around them

Having plant identifiers and a built-in source of information to help them explore the nature around them

2

It should motivate both the parents and the kid to continue using it

4

Should cater to both parents and kids- regulation by parents and use by kids

6

Should be catering to more age groups and experience levels in gardening

Strategy

1.Target Audience analysis

Primarily aimed at parents who want their kids to get off the screen and build a hobby.
